My Favourite Barcelona Foodie Find

A few days before I travel, I’ll always spend a bit of time researching restaurants. There are so many amazing places to eat, but also so many bad ones and although it’s nice to not have everything planned out, some of my best finds have been an organised part of the trip; places I would never just have stumbled across. This trip was no different. The place I had read so much about and had to go to was called Flax and Kale.

Ok,the name is a bit of a giveaway - how healthy can you get? But, I'm sure you can see why I had to try it.

Flax and Kale

The theme of the restaurant rests on the notion that more and more people not only want a delicious meal but also one that will benefit their well-being. As soon as you walk into the light airy space you are greeted with fridges full of cold pressed juices and displays of yummy organic, raw superfoods. The wooden tables and chairs and industrial feel of the visible kitchen just added to the healthy vibe.

Their motto: Eat Better Be Happier Live Longer - is something I also embrace and having already seen the menu online, I couldn’t wait to experience the creative and innovative dishes on offer and so, off we went for brunch (in my opinion one of the best meals when you’re away and allow yourself a lie in)

MENUS.jpg

Flax and Kale defines itself as a ‘flexitarian’ restaurant; which means it caters for a people who are mainly vegetarian who occasionally eat meat or fish. The menu was extensive and consisted of 80% plant based foods and the remaining 20% containing oily fish.

The dishes are categorised into 4 areas: Raw food, plant based, gluten free and oily fish. Many of the plates overlap and are clearly displayed on the menu. I wanted to try as many foods as possible so we all ordered lots of different things and tasted them all.

Ginger, Lemon, Orange, Pineapple, Carrot, Beetroot and Pear.

Teresas Favourite Smoothie

Baltedo El Cubanito Smoothie

Coconut water, Coconut milk, Banana and Almonds.

This was so thick, it was like an ice cream. I only had about a quarter of it as this was the muesli trade off (see below). Ice cream for breakfast - a nine year olds dream.

Vegan Caramelized Pear and Chocolate Muffin

This was so, so good. We shared it between the four of us and everyone was left wanting more. This was my little one's favourite.

Black Walnut and Banana Bread

Rice and buckwheat flour with walnuts and banana.

This was a little disappointing actually. Not very light and fluffy, in fact a bit wet and tasteless. My banana bread is way yummier!

Coconut Milk Parfait

Housemade coconut milk yoghurt, housemade granola, seasonal fruits and berries.

My eldest daughter opted for this and absolutely loved it. I only had a taste but this was my favourite too.

Gluten Free Muesli

Housemade gluten free muesli, seasonal fruits with peach and blueberry soya yoghurt.

My youngest daughter didn't like this at all. She wouldn't eat it and I had to trade my smoothie which I wasn't too happy about. She doesn't like seeds or nuts so I don't really know what she expected with this muesli. I don't eat any food containing soya so I didnt taste it either.

Acai Bowl

Honey, Banana, Blueberries and Acai blended and topped with Crumbled Chestnuts, Goji Berries and Hemp Seeds.

I loved this; bursting with superfoods, full of vitamins and essential amino acids. It looked so artistic too.

Scandol Scramble

Scrambled free range eggs, mushrooms, spinach, tomato, green garlic, feta cheese and carrots with 6 cereal wholewheat bread.

For once, I didn't order eggs for brunch. There were just too many other things to try and as I don't eat bread and I am allergic to mushrooms, it seemed a bit pointless but I was happy my husband decided to get this. There was an option to have just egg whites but aesthetically this is never a good idea. Anyway, the yolk is the healthiest part of the egg so why take it out?

Would I recommend this place? Silly question. I loved everything about it and can't wait to go back to try the lunch and dinner options.

Now that I am home, I have already attempted to replicate the coconut, banana and almond smoothie. It wont be long before I try the rest. Don’t worry, I will share them all with you when they have been perfected.
